Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Global South at Ghent University 2025

Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Global South at Ghent University is a sandwich scholarship whereby the candidates must complete part of the PhD research in Ghent University and the other half in a university in South.

Eligibility Criteria for the PhD Scholarship:

• Applicants must be from the selected list of nations in South.
• Applicants must find a supervisor in Ghent University to support the research.
• Applicants may conduct research in any discipline; but research related to North-South context is given preference.
• Applicants must be at the beginning stage of their PhD program.
• Applicants must have a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research required to complete the PhD.
• Applicants must provide evidence of the probability of a full scholarship in the university in the South.

Application Process:

• All eligible candidates must submit the completed applications to BOFapplication@ugent.be. 
• The supervisor must submit the following documents
  • "an advice on the candidate".
  • "an advice on the ethical and biosafety context".

Value of the PhD Scholarship:

The successful candidates can avail of the following benefits:

• Full scholarship for 24 months in the Ghent University
• Ghent University promoter receives the following benefits:
  • Bench fee - € 310 per month
  • Travel budget - € 8,000 (Covers part of) the operational costs, as well as part of the travelling costs of the student and both the Ghent University and the local promoter.
