UC Berkeley is committed to recognizing and rewarding graduate student’s contributions to diversifying the academy during their graduate careers and beyond. The purpose of this fellowship award is to assist diverse doctoral students in acquiring sophisticated research skills by working under faculty mentorship on their pre-dissertation research.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Students must have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. The student may be undocumented (AB540, Non-AB540 with DACA).
- Student must be making adequate academic progress towards their degree, as certified by their adviser.
- Students must be in an academic doctoral degree program.
Application Process:
- The Applicant must submit the student nomination.
- Selected candidates will be invited to submit an online application.
- The application must include the following documents:
- Personal Statement.
- Statement of Academic Research.
- Unofficial graduate transcripts.
Selection Criteria:
- Nominees who have not obtained any other significant fellowships and have not proceeded to candidature will be given preference.
- Having encountered circumstances or conditions that prevented them from continuing to graduate study, such as the absence of a family member who attended college, enrolling in a school or schools with inadequate financial or academic support, having a physical or learning disability, or working long hours while still in school.
- Academic study interests centered on issues of culture, society, or education as they relate to social groups with lower educational attainment
- Applicant must provide evidence of a desire to utilize one's PhD degree to help underrepresented groups in education.
Additional criteria to be considered:
- Research interests focus on underserved populations and understanding issues of racial or gender inequalities.
- Academic service advancing equitable access to higher education for women and racial minorities in the fields where they are underrepresented.
- Evidence of an intention to use the doctoral degree toward serving marginalized and underrepresented populations.
Value of the Award:
- The selected candidates are awarded the following benefits:
- USD 30,000 stipend.
- The payment of in-state fees.
- USD 6,000 summer stipend.
