The Aaron Sims MPhil/Ph.D. Scholarship, established by Dr. Aaron Sims, a former Birkbeck student, provides financial support for full-time (three years) or part-time (five years) tuition fees equivalent to UK Home enrolment fees, regardless of the actual fee amount. It is open to applicants and eligible current students pursuing specific MPhil programs in the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Applied Linguistics. Preference may be given to candidates with research projects related to French, German, Dutch, or Portuguese language subjects.
Eligibility for the Aaron Sims Scholarship: For Cultures and Languages PhD Students:
- Applicants must have applied for admission to an MPhil program offered by the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Applied Linguistics for the academic year 2024/25, with the intended start date ideally in October 2024.
- MPhil Comparative Literature
- MPhil French
- MPhil German
- MPhil Iberian and Latin American Studies
- MPhil Japanese
- Candidates should be currently enrolled in an MPhil program offered by the Department of Languages, Cultures, and Applied Linguistics. If enrolled, they should be in their first year of full-time study or their first or second year of part-time study.
- In addition to meeting the eligibility criteria mentioned above, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, having achieved at least a 2:1 or its equivalent in their undergraduate degree. Furthermore, they must show that they have made adequate financial arrangements to cover the remaining costs associated with their studies.

Value of the Scholarship:
Funding covers tuition fees up to the equivalent of UK Home enrolment fees (students who are not eligible for home fees will need to pay the difference), for either full-time (three years) or part-time (five years).
