PhD Research Project: Mechanisms of Alternative Splicing in Neurodegeneration and Ageing
Project Overview:
- This PhD project explores how alternative RNA splicing contributes to ageing, neurodegeneration, and anti-ageing therapies, specifically reduced mTOR signaling and dietary restriction (DR).
- Recent findings have linked alternative splicing to rejuvenation effects observed in Drosophila melanogaster under mTOR suppression and DR conditions.
- The project will manipulate splicing mechanisms, focusing on spliceosome components and specific genes to measure impacts on lifespan, neuronal functioning, and neurodegeneration.
Benefits and Funding:
- Stipend: A tax-free annual stipend at the UKRI rate (£19,237 for 2024/25).
- Research Costs & Tuition Fees: Covered at the UK rate.
- Duration: 4 years, fully funded.
- Training: Extensive training in experimental biology, functional genetics, and quantitative analysis.
Eligibility:
- Open to both UK (home) and international (including EU) students.
- Candidates should have (or expect to gain) at least an upper second-class honours degree or equivalent in biological, chemical, physical science, or mathematics disciplines.
- International students should check if they meet entry requirements for their country.
- Full studentships are available for outstanding international applicants on a competitive basis.
How to Apply:
- To apply, submit an Expression of Interest form by 5pm, Friday 14th March 2025. You can apply for up to three YBDTP projects across different universities.
