The Irish Research Council serves as the national funder of distinguished research endeavors spanning a broad spectrum of disciplines. It allocates resources towards both discovery research and the development of innovative concepts aimed at tackling significant societal issues. This funding is distributed among a diverse array of outstanding researchers at various career stages.

Eligibility Criteria :

  • Applicants may come from any nationality.
  • Applicants of any age may apply for the scholarship.
  • Applicants need to be affiliated with a recognized Irish university or research group.
  • Applicants must apply in English or Irish.
  • Applicants must not have had two previous unsuccessful applications to the relevant program.
  • Applicants must hold a first-class or upper second-class honours bachelor’s, or the equivalent degree.
  • Applicants require an academic supervisor willing to guide their proposed research.

Application Process :

     Before Applying

    • All eligible candidates must first contact the research office in the proposed host institution for information and clarification on the call.
    • Before applying, the candidates must contact and discuss the research project with the proposed academic supervisor or mentor.
    • If the candidate does not have an ORCID, they must register at www.orcid.org before applying.
    • All applicants must complete and pass a preliminary eligibility quiz on the online application system before accessing the application form.  

     While Applying

  • All eligible candidates must apply online to be considered for the scholarship.
  • The candidates must not provide any additional materials until and unless requested by the provider.
  • Applications are assessed under four headings:
    • Applicant
    • Project
    • Training and career development aspects of the proposal
    • Environment

Value of the Scholarship:

The successful candidates can avail of the following benefits:

  • Stipend of EUR 22,000 per annum;
  • Contribution to fees (including non-EU fees) up to a maximum of EUR 5,750 per annum; 
  • Eligible direct research expenses of EUR 3,250 per annum.

  • All interested candidates must go through the 2025 Call Document before applying.
