To support access to higher education, a group of professionals founded the non-profit Canon Collins Thekgo Bursary in 2007. It is financed entirely by private donations from people and is voluntarily managed by a committee of supporters and the UK office of Canon Collins. The bursary is intended for students whose academic records and degree certificates have been withheld after they have completed their undergraduate or honours studies because of unpaid debt to the university. The project was created in response to the alarming fact that students in South Africa miss out on work and future education chances because their academic records are suppressed because of unpaid debt.
