Background:
The Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program (formerly known as the Minority Scholars Program) was established in 1976 to honor Darwin T. Turner, an African American student who, at the age of 16, was the youngest person ever to graduate from the University of Cincinnati. In addition to providing full-tuition funding, Darwin T. Turner Scholars are expected to participate in programs and activities designed to improve their intellectual, personal, and professional development.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be graduating high school seniors or have not been previously enrolled post-high school as a student at a college/university.
- Candidates must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or 3.2.
- Students should seek admission to a baccalaureate degree program.
- Preference is given to the following candidates:
- First-generation college student.
- Member of an underrepresented group concerning race, ethnic, or tribal background.
- Demonstrate involvement, leadership, or advocacy for the diversity and inclusion of marginalized populations.
Application Process:
- All students who complete the university admission are automatically considered for the scholarship.
- If selected, the candidates are sent an invitation to complete the scholarship application.
Value of the Scholarship:
- The selected candidates are awarded the following benefits:
- Eight semesters of in-state tuition.
- Student fees.
- Selected candidates must meet the following requirements to maintain the scholarship:
- Must complete at least 12 credit hours per semester.
- Must maintain a minimum of 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Must participate in all program seminars and activities held throughout the year.
- Must complete a minimum of thirty community service hours.
- Must sign in weekly to the Office of Ethnic Programs and Services.
- Must complete a diversity project.
- Must meet with an EPS staff member upon request.
